Choose a picture
Guidance
The Google-named build of the Android avatar picker. Its English labels on this site are "Choose a picture" and, on some observations, "Google Pixel Avatar Picker" or "Google Avatar Picker", with localised equivalents in other locales. Two independent open-source projects map this package name to the AOSP package com.android.avatarpicker, documented separately on this site: the PACKAGE_NAME_MAP in GrapheneOS's arsclib and the package-name map in LineageOS's resource overlay tooling. The description of what it does below is taken from the AOSP sources for com.android.avatarpicker and applies to this package on the strength of that mapping; Google's own build was not found as published source. In AOSP, the avatar picker's manifest declares AvatarPickerActivity behind the com.android.avatarpicker.FULL_SCREEN_ACTIVITY action. SettingsLib's EditUserPhotoController, described in its source as the logic "for starting activities to take/choose/crop photo", sends that action when a user's photo is being edited, and its default configuration names com.android.avatarpicker as the picker package. The Android 17 release manifest adds AvatarPickerSetupWizardActivity behind a SETUP_WIZARD_ACTIVITY action and requests the com.google.android.setupwizard.SETUP_COMPAT_SERVICE permission. This site records that same permission for the Google-named package, alongside GET_ACCOUNTS_PRIVILEGED, MANAGE_USERS and REORDER_TASKS. This site aggregates permissions across observations rather than per build, so which builds request them cannot be established. Version note: this is a recent package. The AOSP project's earliest listed release branch is android14-qpr3-d1-release, and this site records the Google-named package on API levels 35 to 37 only, on Google devices and emulator images plus one HP model. Expect it to be absent from older builds. Each signer this site records for it is a key that also signs the Android framework, a platform-level key: Google keys on the Google entries and an HP OEM key on the HP entry. For Android Enterprise, EMM and kiosk fleets no enrolment or policy role is identified in the sources cited here. If it fills the role the AOSP sources describe, disabling it would be expected to break the choose-a-picture step when a user's photo is edited; the effect on device setup on Android 17 builds could not be established. No benefit of disabling it was found.

Package intelligence
Observed signing, permission, version and size signals from contributing devices - descriptive of that sample, not a verdict. These come from the v2 Package Search sync, which not every device has contributed to yet, so for some packages this detail is partial or not present at all.
- Signed by Google's own signing key (the same key Google uses across devices), so it is a Google-provided preinstall that updates independently of the system image, though 8 different Google signing keys appear across the fleet. It also signs the Android framework, so it is a platform-level key on its device(s).
- Its largest observed manifest declares 5 permissions: 2 signature or system-level, 1 install-time and 2 vendor or uncatalogued.
- APK size ranges from 3.9 MB to 6.7 MB across the reporting device profiles, so the build differs substantially between them.
- Never reported as user-facing, so it runs as a background or system component rather than an app the user opens.
Declared permissions (5)
Largest permission set observed for this package. Text is Android's own published description where one exists; platform permissions Android does not document show their granted protection level (in grey) instead; vendor or unknown constants show the name only.
| Permission | Description |
|---|---|
GET_ACCOUNTS_PRIVILEGED |
Signature or privileged system permission. |
MANAGE_USERS |
Signature or privileged system permission. |

Manage on devices
ADB commands for this package (the inverse of each is included so you can undo). Run from an authorised shell or wire the equivalent into your DPC. Verify on a test device first - this database doesn’t yet classify which packages are safe to change. --user 0 targets the current user; drop it (and use a privileged shell) to act device-wide.
/system, so Restore re-adds it (-k keeps app data)Seen on
Each record is a device profile (make + model + Android version). Each unique handset that syncs against a matching profile will increase the observations of a package, thereby increasing confidence that a package is expected to be on a device.
