Sounds
Guidance
A Google-signed app whose English label on this site is "Sounds", with localised equivalents in other locales. No Google documentation naming this package was found, so what follows is assembled from the package name, a community build file and the AOSP component of the similar name, and the tie between them is an inference. The Open GApps build project defines a module called GoogleSoundPicker with the package name com.google.android.soundpicker, installed as a privileged app and set to override the AOSP SoundPicker module. That is one community packaging project's build file rather than a Google source. The AOSP SoundPicker it overrides there is com.android.soundpicker, documented separately on this site: its manifest declares a RingtonePickerActivity handling android.intent.action.RINGTONE_PICKER, an action the Android developer reference describes as one that "Shows a ringtone picker". On that basis this package is likely to be Google's replacement ringtone and sound picker, but whether it handles that action on a given build could not be confirmed from the sources cited here. This site records it requesting, among others, READ_MEDIA_AUDIO, MODIFY_AUDIO_SETTINGS, VIBRATE, ACCESS_NOTIFICATION_POLICY, INTERNET and DOWNLOAD_WITHOUT_NOTIFICATION, plus Google-specific permissions named for a haptic provider and for adaptive vibration. This site aggregates permissions across observations rather than per build, so which builds request them cannot be established. Version note: this site records the package on API levels 31 to 37, on Google devices and emulator images plus one HP model, with version names from 2.8 to 3.4, and the site's roll-up counts 47 observations carrying the updated-system-app flag. No change of role across Android releases could be sourced. The three signers recorded are classified as Google keys and none of them is recorded signing any other package in this site's data. For Android Enterprise, EMM and kiosk fleets no management role is identified in the sources cited here. If it is the sound picker its name and the build file above indicate, disabling it would be expected to affect the screens where a user chooses a ringtone, notification or alarm sound, but the effect could not be established, so no rating is given.
Package intelligence
Observed signing, permission, version and size signals from contributing devices - descriptive of that sample, not a verdict. These come from the v2 Package Search sync, which not every device has contributed to yet, so for some packages this detail is partial or not present at all.
- Signed by Google's own signing key (the same key Google uses across devices), so it is a Google-provided preinstall that updates independently of the system image, though 3 different Google signing keys appear across the fleet. This certificate spans 4 device makes - the hallmark of a globally distributed Google key.
- Its largest observed manifest declares 13 permissions: 3 runtime (user-granted), 6 install-time and 4 vendor or uncatalogued.
- APK size ranges from 4.5 MB to 7.4 MB across the reporting device profiles, so the build differs substantially between them.
- Reported as an updated system app in 48 of 59 observations - a newer build was installed over the one in the system image. Multiple observations can come from the same device profile.
Declared permissions (13)
Largest permission set observed for this package. Text is Android's own published description where one exists; platform permissions Android does not document show their granted protection level (in grey) instead; vendor or unknown constants show the name only.
| Permission | Description |
|---|---|
ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE |
Allows the app to view information about network connections such as which networks exist and are connected. |
ACCESS_NOTIFICATION_POLICY |
Allows the app to read and write Do Not Disturb configuration. |
DOWNLOAD_WITHOUT_NOTIFICATION |
- |
GET_PACKAGE_SIZE |
Allows the app to retrieve its code, data, and cache sizes |
INTERNET |
Allows the app to create network sockets and use custom network protocols. The browser and other applications provide means to send data to the internet, so this permission is not required to send data to the internet. |
MODIFY_AUDIO_SETTINGS |
Allows the app to modify global audio settings such as volume and which speaker is used for output. |
READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE |
Allows the app to read the contents of your shared storage. |
READ_MEDIA_AUDIO |
Allows the app to read audio files from your shared storage. |
VIBRATE |
Allows the app to control the vibrator. |
WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE |
Allows the app to write the contents of your shared storage. |

Manage on devices
ADB commands for this package (the inverse of each is included so you can undo). Run from an authorised shell or wire the equivalent into your DPC. Verify on a test device first - this database doesn’t yet classify which packages are safe to change. --user 0 targets the current user; drop it (and use a privileged shell) to act device-wide.
/system, so Restore re-adds it (-k keeps app data)Seen on
Each record is a device profile (make + model + Android version). Each unique handset that syncs against a matching profile will increase the observations of a package, thereby increasing confidence that a package is expected to be on a device.
