Wfd Service
Guidance
Reported on devices as "Wfd Service", this appears to be a Qualcomm component with no launcher icon in our sample, recorded on devices from CipherLab, Crosscall, Datalogic, Elo Touch Solutions, Fairphone, HMD Global, Lenovo, Nothing, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Zebra Technologies, isafemobile and Motorola. Where signer data is recorded it is signed with OEM keys this site attributes to the device makers, each of which also signs the Android framework, a platform-level key. No authoritative Qualcomm documentation reviewed for this note identifies the package or its implementation. Qualcomm does not document it by package name in the sources cited here. "WFD" is the usual abbreviation for Wi-Fi Display, the Wi-Fi Alliance specification certified as Miracast for mirroring a screen to a display over Wi-Fi, and its permissions fit that reading: it requests permissions to capture video output (including secure video output), to access SurfaceFlinger, to inject input events and to run a media playback foreground service. Its Wi-Fi Display role is therefore an inference from its name, label and observed permissions, not a documented fact. This site aggregates permissions across observations rather than per build, so which builds declare them cannot be established. Version note: in our sample it is recorded on devices running Android 9 to Android 16 (API 28 to 36), and this site's roll-up reports both its oldest and newest version as 2.0. Any change in its role across those releases could not be sourced. For Android Enterprise, EMM and kiosk use, no enrolment or management role is identified in the sources cited here. If it is the Wi-Fi Display service its name indicates, disabling it would be expected to stop wireless screen mirroring to Miracast displays on that device. That was not tested, so try it on one device of each model first.
Package intelligence
Observed signing, permission, version and size signals from contributing devices - descriptive of that sample, not a verdict. These come from the v2 Package Search sync, which not every device has contributed to yet, so for some packages this detail is partial or not present at all.
- Re-signed by each device maker with its own platform key - 10 different certificates appear across 9 device makers in our sample. That is the signature of a stock AOSP/system package every OEM builds and signs itself, not a single maker's or a third party's preinstall. These are platform-level keys: they also sign the Android framework itself.
- Its largest observed manifest declares 13 permissions: 1 runtime (user-granted), 5 signature or system-level, 5 install-time and 2 vendor or uncatalogued.
- Never reported as user-facing, so it runs as a background or system component rather than an app the user opens.
Declared permissions (13)
Largest permission set observed for this package. Text is Android's own published description where one exists; platform permissions Android does not document show their granted protection level (in grey) instead; vendor or unknown constants show the name only.
| Permission | Description |
|---|---|
ACCESS_SURFACE_FLINGER |
Signature-level system permission, for platform-signed apps. |
BLUETOOTH |
Allows the app to view the configuration of the Bluetooth on the phone, and to make and accept connections with paired devices. |
CAPTURE_SECURE_VIDEO_OUTPUT |
Signature-level system permission, for platform-signed apps. |
CAPTURE_VIDEO_OUTPUT |
Signature-level system permission, for platform-signed apps. |
FOREGROUND_SERVICE |
Allows the app to make use of foreground services. |
FOREGROUND_SERVICE_MEDIA_PLAYBACK |
Allows the app to make use of foreground services with the type "mediaPlayback" |
INJECT_EVENTS |
Signature-level system permission, for platform-signed apps. |
INTERNET |
Allows the app to create network sockets and use custom network protocols. The browser and other applications provide means to send data to the internet, so this permission is not required to send data to the internet. |
POST_NOTIFICATIONS |
Allows the app to show notifications |
RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED |
Allows the app to have itself started as soon as the system has finished booting. This can make it take longer to start the phone and allow the app to slow down the overall phone by always running. |
START_FOREGROUND_SERVICES_FROM_BACKGROUND |
Signature or privileged system permission. |

Manage on devices
ADB commands for this package (the inverse of each is included so you can undo). Run from an authorised shell or wire the equivalent into your DPC. Verify on a test device first - this database doesn’t yet classify which packages are safe to change. --user 0 targets the current user; drop it (and use a privileged shell) to act device-wide.
/system, so Restore re-adds it (-k keeps app data)Seen on
Each record is a device profile (make + model + Android version). Each unique handset that syncs against a matching profile will increase the observations of a package, thereby increasing confidence that a package is expected to be on a device.
