"AlwaysOnDisplay", the Samsung component behind Always On Display on Galaxy phones and tablets. Samsung describes the feature as showing the time, date, notifications and missed calls while the screen is off, with selectable clock styles and downloadable additions, and states that it will not cause screen burn-in because the image is repositioned slightly over time. It is OEM platform-signed by Samsung, carries no launcher icon and is configured from Settings rather than opened as an app. It is more deeply wired into the lock screen than its name suggests. The permissions recorded here include display brightness control, device power, widget binding, media content control, wallpaper handling and secure settings writes, alongside private permissions for Samsung's clock face, lock screen data, routines, reminder and weather providers. That is why it is worth separating two different actions: turning the feature off, and disabling the package. Turning Always On Display off in Settings is the reversible, supported route and is what most fleets want. For Android Enterprise, EMM and kiosk deployments the interesting part is what an always-lit lock screen shows. On shared, counter-mounted or single-app devices, notification content visible without unlocking is an information disclosure question, and on devices left permanently on charge it is also a display longevity and power question. Samsung's own management tooling reaches it: Knox Service Plugin's Device and Settings customisation profile includes a Show always-on screen control policy governing whether the quick panel shortcut appears. Prefer policy or the Settings toggle over disabling the package, and if you do disable it, test the lock screen on one device first. Version note: the feature's role is long-standing but its options have changed repeatedly across One UI releases, and Samsung documents the changes. On One UI 6.0 and lower the clock type and colour were customisable within AOD; from One UI 6.1 the AOD uses the same clock as the lock screen, and Samsung notes that some clock styles were removed. Auto brightness was on by default and adjustable on One UI 6.0 and lower, and is not available on One UI 6.1 and above. Screen orientation moved the same way: a portrait or landscape choice within AOD on One UI 6.0 and lower, and a quick settings panel lock from One UI 6.1. Showing music information is documented for One UI 6.1 and lower. On One UI 7.0, on the Galaxy S25 and other devices, Now brief widget information is shown on the AOD lock screen. That last point is the one to watch on a managed fleet, since it puts more content on a screen anyone can read without unlocking the device. The builds recorded here run from version 7.1.97.9 to 8.9.52.84 with target SDKs of 31 to 37, on devices from API 28 to 37, and the package size ranges from roughly 28 MB to 80 MB across those builds. Samsung states that available screens and settings vary by carrier, software version and model. No Android release in which the package itself was superseded or replaced could be sourced.
