Samsung USB-C headset
Guidance
A Samsung system component whose English label is "Samsung USB-C headset", with localised equivalents in other locales. It is signed by a Samsung OEM key that also signs the Android framework, a platform-level key, has no launcher entry and no user-facing observation in our sample, and no observation here is flagged as an updated system app. Samsung's own Knox Common Criteria application lists record this package under a different label, "TestWandFota": version 1.1.54 on the Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G list for Android 10, and version 1.2.12 on the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G list for Android 11. That older label reads as a firmware-over-the-air (FOTA) name, which is our reading rather than anything Samsung states. Samsung documents a related user workflow without naming any package: its support article for the Galaxy S23 says intermittent sound, lock-ups or sound lag can occur with some older Samsung USB Type-C earphones, and that updating the earphones' firmware resolves it, by tapping a "Checking firmware version" notification and then "Update". The permissions recorded for this package fit that workflow: MANAGE_USB (which AOSP defines as allowing an app to manage preferences and permissions for USB devices, at signature or privileged protection level), INTERNET, POST_NOTIFICATIONS and foreground-service permissions. The tie between that documented firmware update and this package is our inference from its labels and permissions, not a Samsung statement. It also requests MANAGE_USERS and READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE, for which we could not source a reason. This site aggregates permissions across observations rather than per build, so which builds request them cannot be established. Version note: in our sample it is recorded on Samsung phones and tablets running API 33 to 37 (Android 13 to 17), at versions 1.2.49 to 1.2.62. The label change from "TestWandFota" to "Samsung USB-C headset" is sourced only as far as the two Samsung lists above and this site's observations; the release in which it changed could not be sourced, and no change in the package's role across Android versions could be sourced either. For Android Enterprise, EMM and kiosk use, no enrolment or management role is identified in the sources cited here. If it is the component behind the earphone firmware notification, disabling it would be expected to stop those firmware updates being offered, which matters where staff use Samsung wired USB-C earphones or headsets. Whether wired USB-C audio itself depends on it could not be sourced. On fleets that do not use Samsung wired headsets it is a lower-risk candidate, but test on a single device before applying it more widely.

Package intelligence
Observed signing, permission, version and size signals from contributing devices - descriptive of that sample, not a verdict. These come from the v2 Package Search sync, which not every device has contributed to yet, so for some packages this detail is partial or not present at all.
- Signed by the device maker's own signing key (Samsung), so it is an OEM preinstall, and that single certificate is consistent across all 16 device profiles. It also signs the Android framework, so it is a platform-level key on its device(s). Inferred from the certificate appearing only on Samsung devices (508 packages, 10196 observations).
- Its largest observed manifest declares 8 permissions: 2 runtime (user-granted), 3 signature or system-level, 2 install-time and 1 vendor or uncatalogued.
- Never reported as user-facing, so it runs as a background or system component rather than an app the user opens.
Declared permissions (8)
Largest permission set observed for this package. Text is Android's own published description where one exists; platform permissions Android does not document show their granted protection level (in grey) instead; vendor or unknown constants show the name only.
| Permission | Description |
|---|---|
ACCESS_LOCAL_NETWORK |
- |
FOREGROUND_SERVICE |
Allows the app to make use of foreground services. |
INTERNET |
Allows the app to create network sockets and use custom network protocols. The browser and other applications provide means to send data to the internet, so this permission is not required to send data to the internet. |
MANAGE_USB |
Signature or privileged system permission. |
MANAGE_USERS |
Signature or privileged system permission. |
POST_NOTIFICATIONS |
Allows the app to show notifications |
READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE |
Allows the app to read the contents of your shared storage. |
START_FOREGROUND_SERVICES_FROM_BACKGROUND |
Signature or privileged system permission. |
Manage on devices
ADB commands for this package (the inverse of each is included so you can undo). Run from an authorised shell or wire the equivalent into your DPC. Verify on a test device first - this database doesn’t yet classify which packages are safe to change. --user 0 targets the current user; drop it (and use a privileged shell) to act device-wide.
/system, so Restore re-adds it (-k keeps app data)Seen on
Each record is a device profile (make + model + Android version). Each unique handset that syncs against a matching profile will increase the observations of a package, thereby increasing confidence that a package is expected to be on a device.
