Guidance

Safe to disable verified 14 Sep 2026

"PhotoRemasterService", the background worker behind Samsung's Remaster picture feature in the Gallery app. Samsung documents Remaster as a tool reached from the Gallery menu on a selected photo, which enhances the image and offers a before and after comparison before saving, and notes that it is only present on selected models and software versions. This package carries no launcher icon of its own and is never user-facing in our sample: the feature is surfaced entirely through Gallery. The permissions recorded here fit that role and are the reason for the attribution. It reads the Samsung Gallery provider and the Samsung photo editor, holds broad media and storage access including ACCESS_MEDIA_LOCATION and MANAGE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE, and grants itself access to a Samsung on-device neural network service. It is OEM platform-signed by Samsung and appears on Galaxy phones and tablets across the A, S, Z, Note and Tab ranges. It is also large and growing: builds recorded here run from about 32 MB to about 127 MB, which is consistent with on-device image models being shipped inside the package. For Android Enterprise, EMM and kiosk deployments this is a consumer photography convenience with no part in enrolment, policy or device management, and on storage-constrained fleets the space it occupies is a real consideration. The expectation is that disabling it costs the Remaster option in Gallery and nothing else. That rests on the package's own profile rather than on any Samsung statement about disabling it: it is not user-facing, it exists to serve one optional Gallery feature, and it holds no framework, management or provisioning role. Samsung does not document the effect of disabling it, so test on one device before applying the change across a fleet. Version note: the builds recorded here span versions 6.1.00.48 to 9.0.00.10 with target SDKs of 33 to 36, on devices from API 33 to 37, and Samsung's own documentation states that availability varies by model and software version. No Android release in which this package's role changed or was superseded could be sourced, so treat its presence as device-dependent rather than tied to a particular Android version.

Package intelligence

Observed signing, permission, version and size signals from contributing devices - descriptive of that sample, not a verdict. These come from the v2 Package Search sync, which not every device has contributed to yet, so for some packages this detail is partial or not present at all.

Manage on devices

ADB commands for this package (the inverse of each is included so you can undo). Run from an authorised shell or wire the equivalent into your DPC. Verify on a test device first - this database doesn’t yet classify which packages are safe to change. --user 0 targets the current user; drop it (and use a privileged shell) to act device-wide.

Disable for the current user
adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.samsung.android.photoremasterservice
Remove for the current user - a per-user uninstall; the APK stays on /system, so Restore re-adds it (-k keeps app data)
adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.samsung.android.photoremasterservice
Re-enable
adb shell pm enable com.samsung.android.photoremasterservice
Restore (re-install for the current user)
adb shell pm install-existing com.samsung.android.photoremasterservice
