Guidance

Disable with caution verified 29 Aug 2026

A Samsung on-device component for SmartThings, Samsung's smart-home platform. It is recorded on this site under more than one label, including "SmartThings Companion" and "SmartThings Framework", and in our sample it is signed with Samsung's platform key and is not user-facing on any device it was seen on, so it is background plumbing rather than an app someone opens. The user-facing SmartThings app is a separate package. Samsung documents SmartThings as a product: an app for connecting, controlling and automating smart devices and appliances, including devices that support the Matter standard, with everything registered to a single Samsung account. Samsung does not publish a component-level breakdown naming this package, so treat it as part of the SmartThings function on Galaxy devices rather than assuming a precise standalone role for it. For Android Enterprise, EMM and kiosk use this is consumer smart-home support with no part in enrolment, policy enforcement or device security, and it is of little use on a corporate or dedicated device. Because Samsung documents SmartThings as a whole and not the disabling of this background component, and because other Samsung apps may call into it, treat removal as caution and test on a single device before applying it fleet-wide. Sites that genuinely use SmartThings, for example for building or appliance control, should leave it in place. Version note: this site records more than one label for the package, including "SmartThings Companion" and "SmartThings Framework", and both appear across overlapping locales, so the observations give no chronology and should not be read as evidence of a rename. What the difference between the labels means, and whether it tracks a build or One UI version, could not be sourced, and no documented change of role across Android versions was found.

Package intelligence

Observed signing, permission, version and size signals from contributing devices - descriptive of that sample, not a verdict. These come from the v2 Package Search sync, which not every device has contributed to yet, so for some packages this detail is partial or not present at all.

PermissionDescription
ACCESS_BACKGROUND_LOCATION This app can access location at any time, even while the app is not in use.
ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION This app can get your approximate location from location services while the app is in use. Location services for your device must be turned on for the app to get location.
ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION This app can get your precise location from location services while the app is in use. Location services for your device must be turned on for the app to get location. This may increase battery usage.
ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE Allows the app to view information about network connections such as which networks exist and are connected.
ACCESS_WIFI_STATE Allows the app to view information about Wi-Fi networking, such as whether Wi-Fi is enabled and name of connected Wi-Fi devices.
BLUETOOTH_CONNECT Allows the app to connect to paired Bluetooth devices
BLUETOOTH_SCAN Allows the app to discover and pair nearby Bluetooth devices
CALL_PHONE Allows the app to call phone numbers without your intervention. This may result in unexpected charges or calls. Note that this doesn't allow the app to call emergency numbers. Malicious apps may cost you money by making calls without your confirmation, or dial carrier codes which cause incoming calls to be automatically forwarded to another number.
CHANGE_NETWORK_STATE Allows the app to change the state of network connectivity.
CHANGE_WIFI_STATE Allows the app to connect to and disconnect from Wi-Fi access points and to make changes to device configuration for Wi-Fi networks.
FOREGROUND_SERVICE Allows the app to make use of foreground services.
GET_ACCOUNTS_PRIVILEGED Signature or privileged system permission.
GET_INTENT_SENDER_INTENT Signature-level system permission, for platform-signed apps.
INTERNAL_SYSTEM_WINDOW Signature-level system permission, for platform-signed apps.
INTERNET Allows the app to create network sockets and use custom network protocols. The browser and other applications provide means to send data to the internet, so this permission is not required to send data to the internet.
READ_PHONE_STATE Allows the app to access the phone features of the device. This permission allows the app to determine the phone number and device IDs, whether a call is active, and the remote number connected by a call.
READ_PRIVILEGED_PHONE_STATE Signature or privileged system permission. docs ↗
RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED Allows the app to have itself started as soon as the system has finished booting. This can make it take longer to start the phone and allow the app to slow down the overall phone by always running.
RECEIVE_MMS Allows the app to receive and process MMS messages. This means the app could monitor or delete messages sent to your device without showing them to you.
RECEIVE_SMS Allows the app to receive and process SMS messages. This means the app could monitor or delete messages sent to your device without showing them to you.
RECEIVE_WAP_PUSH Allows the app to receive and process WAP messages. This permission includes the ability to monitor or delete messages sent to you without showing them to you.
SET_PROCESS_LIMIT Signature or privileged system permission.
WAKE_LOCK Allows the app to prevent the phone from going to sleep.
WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS Signature or privileged system permission.

Manage on devices

ADB commands for this package (the inverse of each is included so you can undo). Run from an authorised shell or wire the equivalent into your DPC. Verify on a test device first - this database doesn’t yet classify which packages are safe to change. --user 0 targets the current user; drop it (and use a privileged shell) to act device-wide.

Disable for the current user
adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.samsung.android.service.stplatform
Remove for the current user - a per-user uninstall; the APK stays on /system, so Restore re-adds it (-k keeps app data)
adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.samsung.android.service.stplatform
Re-enable
adb shell pm enable com.samsung.android.service.stplatform
Restore (re-install for the current user)
adb shell pm install-existing com.samsung.android.service.stplatform

Each record is a device profile (make + model + Android version). Each unique handset that syncs against a matching profile will increase the observations of a package, thereby increasing confidence that a package is expected to be on a device.
