Guidance

Disable with caution verified 10 Aug 2026

Labelled "ShortcutBNR" on the device and signed by the Samsung OEM keys that also sign the Android framework. Samsung does not publish documentation for this package, so its role is read from its label and its recorded permissions rather than from a vendor description: "BNR" is Samsung's usual shorthand for backup and restore, and the package holds the Samsung Cloud backup library read and write permissions, the Samsung transfer framework permission used by Smart Switch, and permission to query all installed packages. That is the shape of a backup agent for the home screen shortcut and icon layout, not of an app a user opens. What it feeds is documented: Samsung lists "Home screen" as one of the Samsung Cloud backup categories, covering the layout, wallpapers other than the default ones, and Samsung DeX settings, alongside categories such as Settings, Apps, Contacts and Messages. It is the mechanism by which a restored or transferred Galaxy device comes back with its icons in the same arrangement. We have not verified on hardware that this particular package is the component performing that work. Version note: Samsung states that the data you can back up may vary depending on the operating system or phone version, so what the Home screen category actually carries is not fixed across releases. In our sample the package appears only on Samsung devices, across API levels 28 to 37. We could not source a release in which its role changed. For Android Enterprise, EMM and kiosk use it has no enrolment or management role. If it is the component behind the Home screen backup category, then disabling it would be expected to cost that device its home screen layout backup and restore, which matters on staff handsets that people replace or reset and matters very little on a kiosk with a policy-managed launcher. That is an expectation rather than a verified result: we have not confirmed on hardware which component performs the work, nor what else on a Galaxy build calls into it. Leave it in place unless you are deliberately stripping Samsung Cloud backup, and test on one device first.

Package intelligence

Observed signing, permission, version and size signals from contributing devices - descriptive of that sample, not a verdict. These come from the v2 Package Search sync, which not every device has contributed to yet, so for some packages this detail is partial or not present at all.

Manage on devices

ADB commands for this package (the inverse of each is included so you can undo). Run from an authorised shell or wire the equivalent into your DPC. Verify on a test device first - this database doesn’t yet classify which packages are safe to change. --user 0 targets the current user; drop it (and use a privileged shell) to act device-wide.

Disable for the current user
adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.samsung.android.shortcutbackupservice
Remove for the current user - a per-user uninstall; the APK stays on /system, so Restore re-adds it (-k keeps app data)
adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.samsung.android.shortcutbackupservice
Re-enable
adb shell pm enable com.samsung.android.shortcutbackupservice
Restore (re-install for the current user)
adb shell pm install-existing com.samsung.android.shortcutbackupservice

Each record is a device profile (make + model + Android version). Each unique handset that syncs against a matching profile will increase the observations of a package, thereby increasing confidence that a package is expected to be on a device.
