com.android.internal.systemui.navbar.gestural_extra_wide_back Copy

A framework Runtime Resource Overlay (RRO) that selects fully gestural navigation with the widest back-gesture area of the set. It targets the framework package "android" under the category com.android.internal.navigation_bar_mode and sets config_backGestureInset to 40dp, against 30dp in the standard gestural overlay, giving the largest edge strip for recognising a back swipe. It is part of AOSP, has no launcher icon, is toggled by the overlay manager and is signed by whoever signs the build, so it appears under Google or OEM keys depending on the device. It is one of three back-sensitivity variants, alongside gestural_narrow_back (18dp) and gestural_wide_back (32dp). Each differs from the standard gestural overlay only in the back inset, and only one navigation-mode overlay is active at a time. Version note: these three overlays arrived with gesture navigation in Android 10 and are the original mechanism behind the "Back sensitivity" setting. They were then superseded. From Android 11 the Settings app records back sensitivity as the separate Settings.Secure values BACK_GESTURE_INSET_SCALE_LEFT and BACK_GESTURE_INSET_SCALE_RIGHT, and its migrateOverlaySensitivityToSettings routine moves affected devices back onto the standard gestural overlay; the code comment there states that the other gesture nav overlays are deprecated. The overlay directories were later removed from AOSP in Android 15: they are present in the android14-release branch of frameworks/base and absent from android15-release. Current AOSP therefore no longer builds these overlays, so where the package appears on a newer device it comes from the device maker's own build rather than from current AOSP. For Android Enterprise, EMM and kiosk use it has no role in enrolment or policy and exposes nothing a user interacts with. On an Android 10 device where the widest back sensitivity has been chosen, this overlay is what supplies the gesture-navigation configuration, so disabling it can disturb navigation. On a build that follows AOSP's later behaviour the Settings app moves the device onto the standard gestural overlay instead, which leaves this one unused, though a device maker's own build could still wire it up differently. There is nothing to gain from disabling it, and navigation-mode overlays are managed by the overlay manager rather than by disabling apps.

• Re-signed by each device maker with its own platform key - 13 different certificates appear across 9 device makers in our sample. That is the signature of a stock AOSP/system package every OEM builds and signs itself, not a single maker's or a third party's preinstall.
• Never reported as user-facing, so it runs as a background or system component rather than an app the user opens.
