The Companion Device Manager, a core AOSP component (platform-signed) that backs the android.companion.CompanionDeviceManager API. It manages the "association" between a phone or tablet and a companion device such as a smartwatch, fitness tracker or smart glasses, presenting the system pairing dialogue and then granting the companion app a scoped set of permissions appropriate to that device, rather than the app requesting each permission separately. Its role has grown across Android releases, so behaviour is version specific. Companion device profiles, each mapped to an Android role that carries a defined permission set, were added over time: the Watch profile was introduced in Android 12 and the Glasses profile in Android 14. Older releases (the API itself dates back to Android 8.0 / API 26) offered a more limited, profile-less association. Treat the exact profiles and granted permissions as dependent on the device's Android version. For Android Enterprise, EMM and kiosk: it is relevant only where companion hardware is in use. If wearables or glasses must pair, this package and its pairing dialogue need to be available (allowlist it in LockTask/kiosk setups that use companion devices). On deployments with no companion hardware it is dormant and generally needs no attention. It is not a tracking or advertising component.
